broken city lab, two tales of a city

Here’s an installation shot of the Broken City Lab project Two Tales of a City at Hamilton Artists Inc., for which I sewed all of those many, many giant letters and metres upon metres of bunting a few months ago.

day 21

Yup, still taking pictures of my breakfast and posting them on my tumblr page. If y’all thought twitter was killing your desire to write on your weblog, my advice is to stay away from tumblr.

breakfast, day 21

Quinoa salad left over from last night’s supper: quinoa, radishes, red pepper, sweet onion, shredded Brussels sprouts, and the best balsamic vinaigrette I’ve ever made; I walked away from the vinegar on the stove and cooked it a bit longer than usual, and whisked the olive oil in more slowly, and when I poured it on the salad it was as thick as blackstrap and felt like making candy.
Watercress (so pretty!), shredded raw Brussels sprouts, thinly sliced kohlrabi, romaine lettuce.

I don’t know why Kevin is so interested, it’s not like he’d eat a single thing in this bowl. He just wants to wreak havoc with anything that belongs to me. I can’t believe I ever described this cat as “very chill“. We clearly didn’t know each other well AT ALL.

today in the studio

A dress prototype I mocked up today: a simple a-line shift with casings at front and back waist for ties; centre front and back neck slightly gathered into bias binding of the same fabric. Opinions appreciated. Please keep in mind the following:

1. the dress is much too big for the mannequin;
2. the fabric is hand printed with oil based inks and hasn’t been washed, so it will soften and drape better than this;
3. armholes will be bound just like the neck but haven’t been done yet;
4. I’m just working on the cut right now and the fabric print is still in progress. It’ll have at least one more layer of printing, probably a lace design in black in the lower half of the skirt.

stubby

I’ve been eyeing up these really nice pencil extenders for a while now, but I’m too cheap to pay the price for the ones I like and too impatient to wait for shipping from Japan. Yesterday in the studio when I was down to a tiny stub of pencil crayon (my last one in that colour), I realized I had a similar thing with a pencil sized eraser in it. That hardly ever gets used.

It fits!

power breakfast, day 8

breakfast 008

Vegetable nori rolls with cashew pâté; a handful of sprouted mung beans.

The pâté recipe is the “ginger almond pâté” from Ani Phyo’s Raw Food Kitchen, except that instead of raw almonds I used cashews and toasted them in a pan before mashing.
